Staircases – Construction
The best type of tread construction for a staircase will usually be determined by its position and function. These are some examples:

Closed Tread common in most houses. Usually carpeted.	Open Tread looks less intrusive. Often used in lounges.	Cut String decorative and impressive. Looks especially good in large hallways.	Alternating Tread used only where space is very tight, such as for access to a loft space.
